How Chiropractic Care Can Help Relieve Headaches
If you’ve ever suffered from chronic headaches or migraines, you know how disruptive and frustrating they can be. Whether it's a dull ache at the base of your skull or a pounding sensation behind your eyes, headaches can interfere with your work, your sleep and your overall quality of life.
What many people don’t realise is that chiropractic care can be a safe, effective, and drug-free solution for reducing both the frequency and intensity of headaches. In fact, many of our patients are surprised to learn just how connected spinal health is to the pain they feel in their heads.
Understanding the Link Between the Spine and Headaches
Many headaches, especially tension type headaches and cervicogenic headaches are rooted in problems with the neck and upper spine. Poor posture, spinal stress and muscle tension can irritate the nerves in the neck and restrict blood flow to the brain, triggering head pain.
That’s where chiropractic comes in.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Chiropractors are trained to identify and correct areas of spinal stress that may be contributing to headache symptoms. Through precise spinal adjustments, chiropractic care helps to:
Restore movement of the neck and spine
Improve nerve function and reduce inflammation
Relieve muscle tension in the upper back and neck
Enhance circulation to the brain and surrounding tissues
By addressing the root cause of many headaches, chiropractic adjustments can reduce dependency on medications and help patients experience long-term relief.
What the Research Says-
Clinical studies support the effectiveness of chiropractic care for headache relief. According to the 2011 evidence-based clinical practice guideline by Bryans et al. (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 34(5):274–289), “evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches.” They emphasise that the specifics of care such as type, frequency, and duration should be taken into account, alongside with clinical experience and individual findings. Another study observed that higher frequencies of chiropractic care were associated with greater reductions in headache and neck pain symptoms. (Haas et al., 2004).
